Hostility to immigrants hurts ourselves
This article in the New York Times sets forth anecdotal evidence that restrictive visa policies hurt the US economy. High-skilled foreign employees (the kind who get H1-B visas) understandably get fed up with the uncertainty and the short leash that our restrictive immigration regime imposes on them, and they opt to work in places like London instead, ultimately to our detriment.

I couldn't agree more. Isolationism and our current immigration policy is stupid.
Obviously we shouldn't let in the Jihadi types, which is why we need to overhaul our terrorist watch list, but I don't think closing the doors is helping us very much.
