I'm an attorney and a partisan Democrat. I confess to having a point of view and an ideology. But I also don't like when people reach conclusions first and get the evidence second; my humble goal is to have more intellectual honesty than that.

My first apolitical post - 2004: the year in music

Thanks for the list Jack! I'm glad you gave the top spot to Merritt & co. I haven't seen that album on a lot of year-end lists (not that I've seen that many.) I think the MagFields might be a victim of their own success. Once you release a 69-song masterpiece, it's hard to match. Some of my favorite CDs from '04 were also by my old reliables of pop--They Might Be Giants, Cake, MTX, Tom Waits, Alice Donut. Really, really well-produced stuff. I just received the Fatboy Slim for Xmas and it is phenomenal--also strangely absent from a lot of critics' lists. Well, you know what they say about critics: critics are like assholes, everyone has one they are trying to avoid. Among other '04 faves--not that anyone asked--are the CD by DJ Nu-Mark, the new 50 Cent single, Sam Phillips's "How To Quit," Jon Brion's two soundtracks, and Clay Aiken's "Embraceable You," Gershwin finally sounds good!
A lot of the names/songs on your list are new to me--I'd love a mixtape if you got a minute. But I know your busy, saving the world from slumlords and all.
